Has anyone else noticed this about learning Spanish after learning French? I have to learn either Spanish or an East Asian language to be more competitive for med school, and everyone tells me I should learn Spanish for more practically reasons (I live in Cali), but since I took French in High School and college that language has become so natural that it has made leaning a similar language like Spanish difficult. There is an interference of old information with this new type of information I am trying to acquire. I noticed this too when I decided to pick up Russian on the side. Verbally, that language is so easy for me to learn! Why is that? And what should I do? My mother is worried that Mandarin or Japanese will be too much for me to learn with my other studies because they are so different. I am worried that I will do poorly in Spanish and not retain the language, because the language is too similar to French. Has anyone else had this problem?
Oh. it is not just learning the language it is pronunciation too. My Spanish sounds horrible.
