My 3 year old an I are learning Spanish toegther?

learning spanish
in COGNITO * asked:

And she is ahead of me, thanks to Dora. She’s ben watching all her cartoons in Spanish. But I’m wondering what would be a good way for us to learn together. You have any good ideas. She can read a little, and I dont’ want to go too fast, but she does know when someone is speaking Spanish or English and I can tell that she is very interested.

Awww… Let her get way ahead of you and then teach you. She will love that!

I hope she knows english very well, otherwise you’re not going to be able to talk to your daughter because all she’ll know is spanish.

i think that is so wonderful that you are doing something with your daughter

as for learning Spanish together perhaps you could buy a spanish learning software (walmart, target, best buy) and both of you can learn at your own pace

Dont want to go to fast? children actually learn languages faster than adults do, ( more active brain cells or something), so dont worry about that. I think what your doing is so awesome, not only are you having quality time with your child but your teaching her important language skills, good for you, i wish i could give YOU 10 points.

Here is a fantastic article on teaching a second language to children. Good luck… or should i say buena suerte!

great for her! Go Dora!!

You could start listening to tapes or CDs in the car??

This is a great idea, and it’s best to learn young (for her) because the mind is still very flexible for intake on language learning- it will be easier for her to learn it then for you, so expect her to get ahead & stay ahead!

She’s going to be a smart lil thing! Keep encouraging the Spanish & English- even if she is ahead of you, provide material to her so she can keep thriving!

good luck & congrats!

That’s a great idea, since she’s ahead of you.. why don’t you watch dora in spanish with her and get leveled with her? Buy some flashcards for yourself and some easier flashcards for her.

Your statements don’t make sense: How does a 3-year-old American learn Spanish without the help from adults? I wanna know!

If I were you I would learn all the basics myself, and then teach her, use her as a way of practicing.

The key to being Bi-lingual is to stay consistent. If she is watching Dora in Spanish try to find other shows that she will enjoy in Spanish. As for you learning together. That will be hard because your 3 year old is still learning language as a whole meaning her LAD (language acquisition device) is still open in her brain, and won’t close until around the age of 7. She will learn the language faster then you although you will obviously be able to read it faster. So learning together may be a problem but speaking it on a regular basis to her should not be a problem and you will get better at it together. Exposing her to another language now is great not only for brain development, but studies show that children who are exposed to another language early in life have a greater phonetic sensitivity to languages making it easier to pick up other languages later in life. Either way you handle this it is great for your 3 year old to learn Spanish, especially if you are in the U.S.

what a great thing!

in my home we only speak spanish…..and my 5 year old is fully bi-lingual i constantly have to remind her not to mix the languages and that at home with her father and i we speak spanish

buy/rent movies in spanish and watch them….Disney and Pixar movie are good in spanish

do not allow her to watch TV in english…..and even you …watch the news in spanish on Univision, Cnn in spanish, Discovery channel in spanish and so on

order children’s books in spanish….there are out there…we have Barbie books, dora, the “if you give a mouse a cookie” series in spanish

make friends with a local spanish speaking mom

i like the idea of software to learn

she will be learning faster and easier than you

good luck

immersion is the easiest and fastest way for anyone of any age to learn a new language. So immerse yourself, watch your shows in spanish aswell, read spanish books together, when you are teaching her things such as colors and shapes say it in both spanish and english. When you are cooking the both of you do it together and whenyou are saying the name of each food say it in both languages.

You do not want her to be more fluent in one than the other, the goal is for her to understand both fully and know the words for object in both languages. This won’t be a problem for you because you are learning this long after the fact that you know English, she is however learning both languages concurrently.

My son knows far more spanish than I do because of dora aswell, alhtough I have to say all the spanish I know is from Dora and I can do fairly well. He wil be coloring and I am raising him in a bilingual french/english home and he will ask me to pass him a color in spanish and I will say what is that color in french and english and although I know all my colors in spanish I make him tell me in the other languages because he needs to know them in french more so than Spanish (he already knows all english colors and shapes etc)

Whata great thing! all children should learn a second language from birth in my opinion while they are still aquiaring language. It is so much easier for them to learn young than it is for us to learn a language at our age.

The older you are the harder it will be for you to learn a new language. I came to America when I was 9 and learned most of my english from watching alot of TV and listening to other students talk. My mom was about 33 when she came here and she spoke broken english, enough to communicate, My dad on the other hand tried but it was too hard for him.

hi,
so you are having spanish classes with your 3 year baby & she is well in that language. the very important thing is you can not compete with a small kid so think like your baby because your baby is in very first step of learning what ever it reads will permanently stored in its brain as you are a mother you shouldn’t run far from the baby but one more thing is you can teach your baby even if you are ahead its like teacher in the same house.so if the language is going fast then no problem you can teach your baby also in that way you will aslo get good practice for that language.
good luck
